Chongqing and Wales

Chongqing is the most rapidly developing part of China and the mission will take place under the umbrella of an extensive and very active relationship between Wales and Chongqing, and in particular a formal Co-operation Agreement signed in March 2008 between the Welsh Assembly Government and the Chongqing Government.  As a result of the relationship and the extensive range of activity, Wales has a high profile in the area

“Wales Weeks” have been held in Chongqing for the past three years and there are activities throughout the year.  The mission will take place during Wales Week 2010, which will include a number of profile-raising events.

The Welsh Assembly Government has two members of staff based in the British Consulate in Chongqing who are available to assist Welsh companies develop their business links in the area, particularly in any follow-up to trade mission business.  Furthermore, UKTI have nominated one of their most experienced local officers in the Chongqing Consulate to lead on Wales business matters.

Chongqing is considered as potentially a good market particularly in the automotive, sustainable technologies, environmental goods and services, agriculture and forestry, medical devices, vocational education, life science and ICT sectors.

The Wales – Chongqing relationship includes agreements and collaboration between Welsh bodies and their Chongqing equivalents in the following areas :

  • Trade and investment
  • Science and Technology
  • Energy
  • Low Carbon Research
  • Environment and Forestry
  • Health
  • Culture
  • Education (Universities and schools)

The Government–to–Government relationship, the profile enjoyed by Wales in the area, and the availability of dedicated on-the-ground support provide an excellent platform for Welsh companies to develop business links in Chongqing.
