Research Excellence
As well as providing some 4,600 graduates in IT-related disciplines each year,
universities in Wales are home to researchers and academics. Leaders in their fields with the backing to take new technologies all the way. They work closely with industry to shorten the route between R&D and the market place.
Our ambition is to see Welsh science make an even bigger impact. We want to foster new relationships, technology transfers, collaboration and product licenses. We want the world to connect to our academic excellence.
Academic Expertise for Business (A4B)
The Welsh Assembly Government has announced the launch of a £70m investment package intended to boost the economy by unlocking the massive commercial potential of research and development in Welsh universities.
a six-year project funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and European Structural Funds, is geared to ensure Wales maximises the economic impact of academic institutions.
It is designed to provide the basis for Wales to become a leading player in key technologies, giving businesses a competitive edge which is important in the current economic conditions.
Centre for Advanced Software and Intelligent Systems (CASIS)

Health Informatics Research Laboratories
The Health Informatics Research Laboratories (Research Labs) at Swansea University is focusing on evaluation, research and innovation that supports real patient benefits to the NHS in Wales and beyond through the delivery of healthcare IT innovations centred on the patient.
Jointly run by Informing Healthcare (IHC)* and the Centre for Health Information, Research and Evaluation (CHIRAL) of the Swansea Medical School’s Institute of Life Science, the Research Labs is designed to form “NHS in a lab”, a safe and accessible research facility for development, testing and evaluation of ICT systems and devices. The major function of the Research Labs is to:
- Simulate real-world healthcare settings for safety, usability and interoperability studies
- Prototyping environment, available to commercial companies
- Collaborative R&D with university experts
- Training environment for health informatics professionals
- View and download interactive eBrochures
* IHC is the Welsh Assembly Government programme set up to improve health services in Wales.
